Pontypool War Memorial | Eight Plaques Attached to the Entrance of Pontypool Park, Commemorating Those Who Were Killed in Both World Wars

This section of Pontypool park, known as the Italian Gardens, was owned by Mrs Ruth M. J. Tenison, the daughter of the late John Hanbury. An inscription on a stone tablet, just inside the park, records that she donated the land to the people of Pontypool in 1924. The white wall along Hanbury Road, that had once kept those gardens private, was replaced with the public entrance that exists today.

It is known(1) that for many years after the Great War, the people of  Pontypool were still deliberating over what form their town memorial should take. And, coinciding with the gift of the Italian Gardens and a scheme led by local J. P. Mr. Godfrey James, the joint Pontypool and Abersychan Memorial Gates (costing some £900) were produced and dedicated on 4th August 1924. Rolls of Honour, bearing the names of the local people who were lost in the Great War were then completed and attached to the railings on either side of the memorial gates. They were unveiled by Major-General Lord Treowen on 18th December 1924.

Originally, two small dedicatory metal plaques, that recorded the details of the unveiling, were attached to the tallest columns that supported the main gates.

The Original Pontypool War Memorial ~ The First World War Dedication Plaques Were Mounted On The Tallest Columns

After the Second World War however, these plaques were relocated and affixed to the smaller, outermost columns. Their original places were usurped by two  Rolls of Honour, bearing the names of those killed in the Second World War.

With raised lettering, the two relocated  Great War plaques read:-
