The Cross of Sacrifice, St Woolos Cemetery, Newport

Within meters of the main entrance to the cemetery stands a war memorial – A Cross of Sacrifice – erected in honour of those who fell in the Great War. At the base of the cross, an inscription reads:-

TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY SEVEN SAILORS AND SOLDIERS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 OF WHOM ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY NINE LIE HERE AND FORTY EIGHT IN CHRISTCHURCH CEMETERY BOTH IN THE COUNTY BOROUGH OF NEWPORT MON.
THIS CROSS OF SACRIFICE IS ONE IN DESIGN AND INTENTION WITH THOSE WHICH HAVE BEEN SET UP IN FRANCE AND BELGIUM AND OTHER PLACES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD WHERE OUR DEAD OF THE GREAT WAR ARE LAID TO REST. THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.

First World War Commonwealth Graves

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website shows that there are, in fact, 168 First World War burials within the vast expanse of St Woolos Cemetery. Most are buried with the distinctive, white CWGC headstones, whilst others are buried in private, family plots.

The graves tend to be scattered across this huge site although one particular section of the cemetery has a large number of CWGC headstones together; burials from both World Wars and other conflicts.

During my visit, I managed to record the images of just over half of the Great War headstones that exist at St Woolos Cemetery. They are available on Flickr and are in the order in which they were taken.
